Visit us and discover the
heart of To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the world’s best loved novels, is set in our beautiful town of Monroeville, Alabama, where Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee grew up just a few blocks from the old courthouse. Today, thousands of Mockingbird fans come here each year in search of the novel’s fictional setting of Maycomb. Informative exhibits about Harper Lee and her childhood friend Truman Capote guide you to the famous courtroom, restored as it was in the 1930s.
The Monroe County Heritage Museum maintains and operates four historic sites in Monroe County that collectively interpret the area’s rich history, ranging from the prehistoric fossil deposits at Claiborne Bluff, Native American culture, pioneer life, politics and the literary legacy of Truman Capote and Harper Lee.

Your enthusiastic voting and support put us in 5th place among 20 sites across the country in this year's Partners in Preservation competition. With more the 78,000 votes, you helped us win $125,000 toward our Save the Wall campaign. Immediate repairs are needed to save the south wall and protect the building and this grant, provided by the American Express Foundation, will allow us to start work. More funds remain to be raised, and we still need your help. Find out more about our urgent needs here. Donate now to help us save the wall!
